Beautiful and mysterious, Greta Garbo was also a style icon, famous for her androgynous, practical yet elegant dressing. ”I like to live simply, dress simply”, she said. She wore little jewelry, but she was rarely seen without her signature gold links on each wrist: The Curb-Link bracelet and watch by Fulco di Verdura. In the late 1930’s Garbo aquired the bracelet and watch, both encircling the wrists in a comforting sequence of overlapping gold links. Bold, simple – and elegant. A ”comfortable classic” Duke Fulco di Verdura (1899–1978) was one of the most influential jewellers of the era, modernising the world of jewelry with his bold yet understated “chic” jewellery. Born into Sicilian aristocracy in 1898, he began his career in Paris as a designer for Coco Chanel (where he created the famous Maltese Cross cuffs.) In 1934 he moved to America and was almost immediately adopted by Golden-age Hollywood personalities and sophisticated New York society. In 1987, a few years after Verdura’s death, Ward Landrigan, then the head of Jewelry at Sotheby’s, bought the rights to the name and to all the Verdura archive. Today Ward Landrigan and his son Nico continue to build on Duke Fulco di Verdura’s legacy.
